The National Electrical Code defined ampacity as - 

the amount of current the conductor can carry continuously under specific conditions of use [Art. 100 definition]. 

Furthermore that code also provide specific guidelines on how to determine the sizes of cable sand conductors based on the given load. This is done in order to prevent accidents such as overheating and fire. 



The cable is rated according to different conditions such as the following:

  • Insulation type
  • ambient temperature
  • material composition
